Making Specifying Generators Easy with Power Design Pro
1/24/2019 12:00:00 AM
Consulting engineers depend upon reliable technology and intelligent applications to ensure they are specifying the right backup power solution for each application.
Generac's Power Design Pro™
is intended to make specifying generators as easy as possible. The one-stop solution center offers specification sheets, installation drawings, emissions information, a specification text library with full inclusive design notes and the ability to link directly to supporting dealers for budgetary quoting and additional support.
To begin using the tool, you first have to go to the
website
and login. Then it will prompt you to put in some project information. “Power Design Pro allows users to easily enter their project information, such as loads, fuel type and electrical configuration,” said Justin Soldan, sales engineer, Generac Industrial Power. “Once the information is entered, the program uses algorithms to calculate the proper generator size and recommends a specific Generac product.”
Soldan said it is all right if the user does not know allof the specific information the project might require. He said Power Design Pro provides safe default settings when specific information is limited. The program incorporates applicable questions in order to model the load’s true characteristics, including full harmonic and transient analysis, to ensure complete generator-to-load compatibility.
Given the vast variation between different types of loads, simple multiplier sizing is just not adequate. Power Design Pro utilizes harmonic analysis to limit the harmonic voltage distortion to acceptable levels. The program automatically selects an appropriate harmonic current signature for each load type, but gives the user the ability to modify it to accurately model any load. Once the loads are entered, Power Design Pro calculates the resulting harmonic voltage distortion as that load is applied to various generators.
The purpose behind this innovative tool is to simplify the work and ensure every project gets the correct size generator. “Our sizing tool is set apart from other design tools by its ease of use,” said Soldan. “Our interface screen takes the user step-by-step from the initial project data to the recommended Generac product screen.”
Along with the size of the generator, the user can also determine exhaust pipe measurements. The exhaust piping module allows users to enter the length of the exhaust piping run and the number of elbow types for a given generator before automatically selecting the appropriate exhaust piping. The module gives the user the ability to oversize the pipe for a given application and then calculates the expected backpressure.
Other features that you can find on Power Design Pro include:
Load-shedding capabilities that enable the user to shed loads entered into the program and evaluate the effects of running those loads against any selected generator configuration.
Gas piping capabilities to determine the required pipe size for gaseous-fueled generators.
Hybrid architecture, making Power Design Pro the fastest, most accurate and up-to-date sizing tool on the market.
Medium voltage product options for sizing projects.
Dynamic calculations for real-time results.
New this year, Power Design Pro is in the cloud. “Moving to the cloud means that Power Design Pro users will no longer be tied to using the tool only on their desktop computers or laptops,” said Donavon Steinmetz, sales engineering manager, Generac Industrial Power. “Now they will be able to use the tool from any internet-connected computer, device — even a smartphone. And they will be able to share project files with other users for virtually seamless collaboration.”
Generac has incorporated almost 60 years of power generation experience into Power Design Pro. The ability to accurately size and design generator solutions is unmatched by any other software in the industry. Try it for yourself
