Generac Loans Products, Manpower in Local Flood Relief Effort
10/17/2017 12:00:00 AM
When torrential rains and subsequent flooding knocked out power from an electrical substation in Burlington, Wis. this past July, Generac Power Systems stepped up to help expedite the recovery process for one of the company’s surrounding communities.
“We received a call from a former employee who is a volunteer firefighter for the city of Burlington, shortly after power outages and high water levels started impacting regions of Southeastern Wisconsin,” explained Andrew Martin, Generac’s director of Operations in Eagle, Wis. “When he asked if we could help in any way, we responded immediately.”
With the basement of Burlington City Hall under water and power outages limiting visibility on the city’s roadway, employees from Generac’s facilities in Eagle, Jefferson and Waukesha, Wis. helped transport water trash pumps and a number of portable generators to lower high water levels and operate important electrical loads. In addition to the light towers sent out to help the National Guard and local law enforcement set up high-visibility check points to regulate traffic and prevent cars from venturing into areas in which flood levels posed significant safety threats, two mobile generators were loaned-out to power an emergency operations center staged at Burlington’s fire station for Southeastern Wisconsin’s Incident Management Team (Southeast IMT).
While the fire station’s on-site emergency standby generator had been sized to power select electrical loads whenever local utility outages occur, the unit was not large enough to take on the power requirements of Southeastern IMTs 40 on-site workers and air-conditioning system, which was used to dissipate the intense summer heat and create a tolerable work environment.
To ensure relief efforts went uninterrupted, Generac representatives were on hand to help connect the fire department’s air conditioners and setup a 25 kW mobile generator capable of fulfilling Southeastern IMT’s enhanced power needs. Thanks to Generac’s staff of volunteers, the generator was properly connected and provided power to the fire station for nearly three days until the city of Burlington was restored to a state of normalcy.
In addition to the National Guard, local law enforcement and Generac, other agencies dedicated to Burlington’s flood relief efforts included U.S. Cellular, which provided cell phones and wireless routers to operate building control systems and facilitate emergency communications where the city’s phone lines and internet servers were under water. Local restaurants also pitched-in by providing food to workers who organized and executed flood relief efforts for nearly a week after the natural disaster initially occurred.
“It was great to see a community and its surrounding businesses come together when assistance was needed most,” said Lewis. “As emergencies can be unpredictable, we were pleased to see our products, as well as members from our engineering lab, training center and service department, provide relief to those who unexpectedly found themselves in need.”
