Natural Gas as a Reliable Fuel Source
9/20/2018 12:00:00 AM
Natural gas is becoming the preferred solution in many applications, for a number of reasons: it provides much longer runtimes, the permitting is easier and units with natural gas have 90% fewer emissions compared to diesel generators. In addition, there is no fuel maintenance associated with natural gas generators, while diesel fuel requires regular conditioning. However, regulatory requirements have limited the use of natural gas generators in certain commercial and industrial facilities due to traditional practices favoring onsite fuel storage and diesel-fueled engines. Several market players, including the American Gas Association (AGA), are working to ensure natural gas service reliability is properly incorporated into emergency power and standby power supply codes and standards. Researchers are conducting several studies to help overcome perceptions that have been barriers to onsite natural gas power generation for standby and emergency service.
The Gas Technology Institute (GTI) published a report, “Assessment of Natural Gas and Electric Distribution Service Reliability,” and it analyzes data to summarize availability of natural gas and electric distribution services to homes and businesses and the frequency or likelihood of annual outages. The results help illustrate how natural gas distribution systems operate at exceptional levels of service availability.
To gather data for the report, GTI conducted a survey of 12 North American natural gas distribution companies that provided statistics on the number of planned and unplanned service outages as well as the number of service hours lost to outages. The survey data was combined with information from the U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT) and the Common Ground Alliance (CGA) regarding safety incidents or unplanned events.
According to the report, all electric customers typically have one outage per year, while on average only one in 112 gas customers is expected to experience an outage in any given year. GTI’s data said most natural gas outages are for planned equipment replacement. Meanwhile, the data also states that for unplanned outages, only about one in 800 natural gas customers are affected per year.

This data supports the claim that underground natural gas pipelines are not especially vulnerable to weather conditions and have proven stable and dependable throughout many major emergency events. The resilience of the natural gas infrastructure allows for cost-effective, clean, reliable power generation. Customers can also benefit from not having to replenish onsite liquid fuel tanks when backup is needed to provide extended power. In extreme weather events, GTI said delivery of over-the-road fuel supplies can be disrupted for days to weeks.
To provide customers looking at onsite standby generators with a tool to help with decision making, a total cost of ownership calculator was developed to compare the business case for natural gas and diesel. GTI worked with Generac to create this tool, which is available at
