Be Prepared:

According to the National Weather Service, high winds are defined as winds having speeds of 40 mph or more that last for an hour or longer, or winds of 58 mph or more that last for any duration. High winds can accompany a storm, or they can be a storm unto themselves. In either case, they can damage power lines, causing widespread power outages.

  • Listen to a NOAA battery-operated weather radio for critical information from the National Weather Service.
  • Know your community’s warning system for severe weather.
  • Bring inside any unsecured objects, such as patio furniture or garbage cans, that could be blown away or cause damage or injury.
  • Protect your windows with shutters or 5/8 inch plywood panels.
  • Brace your garage doors so that they are able to withstand high winds.
  • If you have one—and if you do not live in a mobile home—take shelter in an interior room without any windows.
