Be Prepared:

Hurricanes are strong storms that cause life and property threats such as flooding, storm surge, high winds and tornadoes. The season runs from June to November in the Atlantic area.

  • Listen to a NOAA battery-operated weather radio for critical information from the National Weather Service.
  • Fill containers with water from your tap ahead of time. Plan on one gallon per person, per day for a 3-day supply.
  • Place all valuable and records in a waterproof container and place on the highest floor of your home.
  • Bring in anything that can be picked up by the wind, such as bicycles, lawn furniture, hanging plants and trash cans.
  • Close windows and doors with hurricane shutters or board them up with plywood.
  • Turn off propane tanks and unplug small appliances.
  • Fill your car’s gas tank in case you must evacuate.
  • Create an evacuation plan with your family members. If you must evacuate, turn off water and electric utilities.
  • Standard homeowner’s insurance does not cover flooding associated with hurricanes, tropical storms, or heavy rain. For more information on flood insurance, visit the National Flood Insurance Program website at www.fema.gov/business/nfip.
