Be Prepared:

Winter storms can occur at temperatures that are near or below freezing. Many winter storms can be accompanied by dangerously low temperatures, strong winds, icing, sleet and freezing rain.

  • Listen to a NOAA battery-operated weather radio for critical information from the National Weather Service.
  • Minimize travel. If necessary, keep a disaster supply kit in your vehicle.
  • Keep your gas tank full for emergency use and to keep the fuel line from freezing.
  • Running water in your home, even a trickle, helps prevent pipes from freezing.
  • Insulate your home by installing storm windows or covering windows with plastic from the inside to keep cold air out.
  • Maintain heating equipment and chimneys by having them cleaned and inspected every year.
  • All fuel-burning equipment should be vented to the outside and kept clear.
