Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great value for the money During the Sandy storm we used our GP5500 to run a portable heater, 2 refrigerators a few lights, TV and cable box and an occasional hair dryer. We did have to alternate some of the appliances so that we did not overload the unit.We used a 30 amp cable with 4 outlets bought separately to run 4 appliances leaving the other GP5500 outlets unused. Overall we are very happy with the generator. We really used it for only the essentials and to keep informed on what was going on elsewhere in the northeast. I would suggest the 30 amp manual transfer switch kit to avoid the extension cords, that is my next investment!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect for home use. Very easy to use. The 5500 is compact and has plenty of power. Backup my house during Sandy for 7 days. 5 gallons of gas for 10 hours , 2 fridges , heating system, water heater, electric kettle and light.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great value for what you get. This is the 1st I've owned. Sandy motivated the purchase. Had to go on a waiting list and Lowes came through on Sunday before. Wired it into the panel. Set-up was easy. It started right up. Had to use it for 24 hours after Sandy and 24 hours after the nor'easter (Andrea?). Powered the whole house with no problems. This generator has provided a long awaited peace of mind.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fantastic unit, Bought this days after hurricane Irene, didn't start it until the night of hurricane Sandy. Started right away after carb was primed. Was the envy of the neighborhood because I had prewired the house with a manual transfer switch so this generator became plug and play basically running my entire house. Can prob run a few window a/c units for summer outages if necessary. Worked well with very little effort.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fantastic Unit I bought this unit in 2017 preparing for a possible Hurricane. I left it in the box prepared to bring it back. My friend convinced me to keep it. I ran it a few times over the year to keep it in running condition for when I would need it. Well here I sat with Hurricane Florence. I am a construction manager and me and my electrician wired it up to my home. This was the best decision I have made in a long time. It ran everything but 220 items. It was nice to have creature comforts such as lights,Xbox and TV for kids and fans and ceiling fans. The first full tank I could have gotten about 11hrs off it. I do not know much about generators but I can tell you this. It worked and did more than I expected. When I chose to upgrade it will be another Generac.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good value for the cost. Very good performance during Hurricane Florance. I do have a couple of instruction/design suggestions. First - the 'Fuel Off' valve. I know your diagrams show vertical for fuel on and horizontal for fuel off but it is a ball valve and for most people, when they go to turn the valve off, it will keep turning and their instinct would be to keep turning it til it stops. This occurs when it is in a vertical position again. This turns the fuel on again. Perhaps the instructions should mention something about 'Vertical' and 'Horizontal' positions and not just count on the illustration in the manual. Second - When the power comes back on and there is a lot of gas still in the tank. There should be an easier way to empty the gas in the tank for storage of the generator. It is very difficult (especially for the average user) to disconnect the fuel filter and drain the tank that way. One way to do this would be to install a 'Y' in the fuel line with a separate valve to use to drain the tank. Another way would be to (in the instruction manual) suggest that the user buy a siphon pump from the local auto supply store and siphon the gas out via the filler cap. You would have to include in the instructions, how to remove the filter. Other than these two point, I found the GP5500 to be a very good unit and am sure I will be pleased over the long haul.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Even better than we expected We bought our Generac just before hurricane Florence. It was much quieter than we expected and powered everything we needed, and then some, during the power outage. It powered our freezer, refrigerator, 2 televisions, DVD player, coffee maker, table lamps, and also charged our phones and laptops. We were really surprised at how little fuel it used too. It ran all of the above for 12 hours before needing to be refueled. We were expecting only 9 or 10 hours at best. We cannot recommend this generator enough. It started on the first pull every time and not even a full pull. It made an uncomfortable situation so much more bearable. We are proud to say that our generator is a GENERAC.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Hurricane relief Lost power during Hurricane Florence and didn't want to chance the power not being restored before the food spoiled. I purchased this generator from Ace Hardware. Added oil and gas, and started with ease on first pull. Ran two refrigerators and a freezer box for 3 1/2 hours and barely used any gas. Ran it from the garage, it was a little loud, but given the nature of the situation, not a big deal.
