A Look Back at the Engineering Symposium
5/24/2018 12:00:00 AM
With a ballroom at the Hilton Milwaukee City Center filled to capacity, nearly 200 power engineering professionals were fixated on the latest innovations in standby and emergency power. Generac hosted its 10
th
Annual Engineering Power Symposium. The three-day event is designed for the practicing engineer to walk away with a better understanding of generator sizing, application and code compliance. This year’s symposium consisted of presentations by Generac and guest power-generation professionals, plus Professional Development Seminar Series (PDSS) courses offered by Generac and distributor experts. Participants gained valuable job-related technical knowledge and earned professional development credits required to maintain their engineering licenses.
“It’s a transfer of knowledge, our knowledge of issues in the design world and in the applications that our users are using generators for,” said Phillip Applebaum, engineer with Halff and Associates. “And on our part, we are finding out about new technologies, the ease of operations and the robustness of the generation that is being provided. It is a win-win for everybody.”
Attendees were also treated to product presentations, question-and-answer panels and a Generac showcase that highlighted Generac’s commercial and industrial product lines. The engineers saw how our products are designed, tested and manufactured.
“Getting to see the equipment is beneficial, because you don’t get to walk out and see large generators every day,” said Kristin Gurley, a senior electrical engineer at CRB Engineering. “Having people there to demonstrate it for you is always educational.”
Each attendee had the chance to work one-on-one with Generac’s engineering and product development teams. That kind of access to the professionals who design our products, analyze trends, and work with government regulations gave participants and opportunity to expand their technical knowledge.
“It is the second time I have come to this event,” said Eric Stewart, a senior electrical engineer at CRB Engineering. “I have always learned a lot during the time we were here, so it has been pretty enlightening.”
“It can be so difficult to get feedback back from anyone other than a third party salesperson,” said Ben Johnston, an engineer at Halff and Associates. “Actually being able to not only track down somebody from within the company but having it opened up in this fashion and asking questions like this is a highlight for me.”
A high point of the event is the presentation of the award for the Project of the Year. This year’s recipients were the Museum of the Bible and Kelly Generator & Equipment Inc. for their design and installation of eight 400 kW Generac natural gas generators.
“This project was so successful because of the coordination of the engineering team and everybody involved. It was a team effort and everybody had that attitude,” said Gary Fink, technical salesman at Kelly Generator & Equipment Inc. “It was a very unique project, and the reward came when everything came together and worked when we started the generators up.”
