Rated 5 out of 5 by from You get what is advertised I decided that going without electricity and having the basement flood after the last hurricane was more stress than I wanted in my life. I did a lot searching on the internet for a generator that would give me the best peace of mind. I settled on the Generac 5940 GP6500- 6500 Watt Portable Generator (5940). I paid for the tail gate service and it was delivered very promptly and wheeled up to my house. Assembly was extremely easy. I put oil and gas in it as directed, and with one pull it was running. A few weeks later I had the "Transfer Switch" installed and we killed all power to the house, started the generator, and flipped the transfer switch to the operating position. Everything we had connected (which was just about everything except central air conditioning) was powered on. We even ran water until our well pump turned on and the generator never even hesitated or appeared to be under strain. So if we ever lose electricity again, especially for a long duration of time, the neighbors will see that we have heat, water, and lights. They will all be welcome! Thanks Generac for supplying a product that truly is what is advertised. In today's world it is nice to see some honesty in advertising.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Replacement I had a coleman powermate 6250w ran great. I hope this generator does as good or better than the coleman. The Generac is more powerful and more quite. The design is better and came with wheel ,handle kit, electric start, oil, 20A cord, and funnel. I'm impressed with the ease of functioning especially starting. The pull start is easy enough my wife started it only using one hand. The electric start works great as well the with just a push of button. I plan to use this generator to power my home in power outage. The coleman could not handle but small amount and wouldn't satisfy my wife. She wants hot bath and we have electric water heater and wants to cook on electric stove plus watch TV. I done lots of research and couldn't find another generator like generac. The new appliances are sensitive to THD level and generac is less than five percent. Generac noise level is low also has three year residential warranty. Where live in a rural area we have power outages a lot all times of the year. Winter time we have been without electric for two weeks solid snow and ice storm and bitter cold

Rated 5 out of 5 by from It powered the home for 7 1/2 Days I bought this generator to power the home during those temporary power outages due to thunder storms. Then Hurricane IAN devastated our part of SW Florida. It was September 30, and I couldn't even go outside to set up and start the generator until 11 PM, when the winds dropped to 50 MPH. I bought the General GP-17500 to make sure, "IF", I ever ran the generator for a couple of days, it would have power capacity to spare. This generator powered the entire home for 7 1/2 days. I shut it down during the afternoon to cool it off, check the oil, and fuel it up for the overnight operation. And yes, I changed the oil and oil filter two times within the 7 1/2 days. Me being me, I even placed/positioned two floor fans to move air across the unit to ensure full cooling of the engine and generator. Like in tornado areas, once IAN caused its damage, the weather in SWFL was incredibility perfect. Low humidity, Low Dew-point, cooler than normal hovering around 75 all day, and cooler at night, for the next 12 days. I had wired this generator to back feed the electrical panel though a mechanical interlock and a 50 amp breaker. The main breaker must be moved to the off position, then the mechanical interlock plate is moved up, allowing the 50 amp breaker to be turned on. And when we needed hot water, we would turn off the home AC, then switch on the electric hot water heater for about 45 minutes, then the hot water heater was switched off again. We did not want to test the full power capacity of the generator, but it powered the two home AC units, the well pump, and when needed, the clothes washer and electric clothes dryer. Here too, we always powered down other high current devices like the AC units, and hot water heater, when washing and drying our clothes. For a "portable generator" bought to power the home for a few hours when a thunderstorm and winds temporarily knocked out the local power company feed, this generator performed well beyond expectations. Our next purchase will be a Generac backup Home standby generator. We now want this style unit so when there is a power disruption, the generator will taker over automatically, and I don't need to send my wife outside with the flashlight, instructions on how to position, connect and start up this unit. (Yea, listen to my big talk here. I do all of this, moving, connection and starting, but now see the wisdom of a built in home standby generator, since we recently moved to SW Florida I will start by getting a propane tank sunk into the ground, our HOA rules require this, and once in, we'll order the Generac unit with transfer switch. And "NO" we will keep the portable generator for a bit as a portable back-up generator to next to be installed backup home generator. I figured it was time to give feedback to those still on the fence.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Out of the box Purchased in early spring for summer camping. Did not use until December and first time running started right up. Let it warm up and would not run with choke off. Ran under load for approximately 8 hours and had no other issues. The problem is that it would have to be almost full choke to run. Took it in for repairs and was told the carburetor needed to be replaced. Contacted manufacturer after service center stated is was not covered under warranty and the manufacturer said same thing. I am replacing the carburetor and hope there will be no further issues. Love the product, not happy with support.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Missing part I just bought a 9200. It was easy to assemble and it works fine. The problem is that the 20 feet 20 amp cord was missing. Customer center was nice and shipped me …the wrong part, a key woodruff. I hope that I will finally get the correct part.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Manual needs some work First of all, let me start off by saying that I really love the generator, but I do not love the manual, it is not very self-explanatory when you're putting the unit together the wording and the pictures are too small and the description on how to put the unit together isn't easily simplified. To handle itself I think I think needs a little bit of revamping because it should lift up all the way and lock into place horizontally and set off a little bit on an angle which I feel is a little uncomfortable bending down lower Did to transport the generator. Mm-hmm on another note connection to the battery is needed which after being connected and reading in the manual to push the start button and hold it down until the unit fires up is completely wrong. my first attempt to do this kept flashing a red light making me think that the battery was dead but in essence after playing around enough times, I realized that you needed to push the battery/start button until it flashes green and then release the button and push it back in again rapidly which causes the engine to start. I spoke with representatives at the Generac, and they were not very helpful or knowledgeable on even how to start the machine which kind of amazed me, I had to figure it out on my own and also the wording that in the actual manual is misprinted and miss directs you on how to start the machine, which needs to be revised ASAP. It should say to push the start button in until you see a green flashing light and then release the button and re push it back into ignite the ignition. Anyway, that is one of my cons with the unit, I have yet to really give it a full test of powering the house, but I have confident that it will work to my needs.
