QUESTIONS TO ASK Your Generac Dealer

To help you be an informed consumer during the process of buying and installing a home standby generator, Generac has prepared a list of questions to ask your dealer or installer about your quote.  These questions will help you understand your quote and how you can control installation costs.

Your Home's Electrical System

There are several factors related to your home's electrical system that can affect the cost of installation of a home standby generator.

  • Location - The closer your generator can be located to the electrical service box, the less wiring is required.  Simply put, distance costs money.  Ask your Generac dealer how your preferred generator location affects the cost of installation and what alternative location(s) may reduce the cost.
  • Circuit Breakers vs. Fuses - Current electrical code requires the use of circuit breakers (shown in the picture.)  If your home's electrical service is using fuses instead of circuit breakers, it will need to be brought up to current code before a generator can be installed.  Ask your Generac dealer if this upgrade is included in your quote.
  • 100 amp vs. 200 amp - Depending on your backup power needs, the size of generator your Generac dealer recommends may require 200 amp electrical service in your home.  As many homes only have 100 amp service, this may require an upgrade of your service.  Ask your Generac dealer if this upgrade is included in your quote.

Your Fuel Source

Home standby generators run using natural gas or propane.  There are several factors related to your fuel source that can affect the cost of installation of a home standby generator.

  • Location - The closer your generator can be located to your gas meter, the less piping needs to be installed.  Simply put, distance costs money.  Ask your Generac dealer how your preferred generator location affects the cost of installation and what alternative location(s) may reduce the cost.
  • Availability - If you do not have an existing natural gas or propane service for your home, it will have to be installed.  Ask your Generac dealer if this is included in your quote.

Permits and Subcontractors

There are several other factors that can affect the cost of installation of a home standby generator.

  • Permits - Most locations require some type of permit(s) to be obtained and inspections to be performed when installing a generator.  Ask your Generac dealer about the costs of permits and inspections included in your quote.
  • Subcontractors - Some Generac dealers will use subcontractors to perform some of the work required (such as digging a trench for a gas line.)  Ask your Generac dealer if they will be using any subcontractors and how this affects the cost of installation.
