The [H2] Hydrogen Home is a first-of-its-kind demonstration project by SoCalGas, showcasing how microgrid energy systems can be clean, efficient, and innovative. The residence uses solar, battery storage, an electrolyzer, and a hydrogen fuel cell—forming a unique, fully integrated microgrid system.
All resources are managed by Generac’s ARC microgrid control system, which coordinates daily operation and backup functions. During peak solar production, the system activates an electrolyzer to
convert excess solar energy into hydrogen. This hydrogen is then stored for later use by a fuel cell, which provides electricity to the home in the evening or during outages.
In the event of a Public Safety Power Shutoff (PSPS), the ARC microgrid controller seamlessly islands the home and dispatches stored energy to critical loads. The combination of solar, battery, and hydrogen extends backup duration far beyond what traditional systems offer.
This solar powered microgrid illustrates how future homes can use clean hydrogen and microgrid technology to reduce reliance on the grid, increase energy independence, and maintain resilience during extreme weather or outages.
