African Government Building Microgrid

1 MIN READ

This grid-connected government facility enhanced its diesel generator operations by integrating energy storage and deploying an ARC microgrid control system. The facility originally had 700 kW of solar and 3,120 kW of generator capacity, but lacked any battery storage—leading to frequent curtailment of excess solar energy and inefficient generator cycling during outages.

The addition of 1.5 MWh of Li-ion battery storage, coupled with Generac’s ARC microgrid controller, resolved these issues by:

  • Charging the storage system with excess solar to eliminate curtailment
  • Discharging during cloud events to prevent generator start-stop cycling

As a result, the facility improved its operational reliability and generator lifespan. Through integration with Generac's Initium platform, the microgrid software provided deep system visibility and led to the discovery of load issues with the HVAC system.

Additional control features enabled time-of-use shifting and enforcement of zero export back to the utility—an essential requirement for this site. These upgrades transformed the generator-dominated site into a high-performing hybrid microgrid system, increasing uptime while optimizing energy use with scalable microgrid technology.
