Rated 4 out of 5 by from First Impession not good, Sence then perfect Bought this generator as a home back up. First use was a long term power outage in cold weather. After 17 hours it pushed the little gasket/bushing out of a fitting where the two wires go through the crank case for the low oil sensor, It puked all the oil out of it on my driveway until the low oil sensor shut it off. Not good at 2am in 5 degree weather. In the dark I thought it blew up with all the oil. Diagnosed it the next day, pushed the bushing back in place with silicone sealant. Sense then it's been perfect. I like the generator now but at 2am the first use I was frustrated. I would still recommend this generator as I think this was a fluke and it's been perfect since

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Won't start in very cold weather I keep my RS8000E in a small garden shed. I run it once a month for 30 minutes. Dec. 2022 was very cold around Christmas. I went out to start the generator just is case we lost power and it wouldn't start. It would turn over, but wouldn't start. I had to wheel it into my work shed and thaw it out, before it would start. I only use premium gas with NO ethanol. I have since put in fuel deicer. I tried it again 2 days later at -10 degrees and same thing, it would not start. I put a little electric heater in my garden shed and after 30 minutes I tried it and it started. 2 days later I tried it again at zero degrees. It took alot of cranking but finally started. The RS in the model name stands for Rapid Start. IMHO not so much.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Finally was able to use my GP17500e I purchased this generator new approximately 5 years ago. I left an initial impression review at that time. Other than monthly test runs, I have not had to use it. Last night it was finally used to provide power for the entire house. It worked flawlessly. It was 28 degF. When I started the generator and it ran continuously for 16 hours with no shutdown. Temps got to a low of 6 degF. It’s one thing to lose power in the summer. Losing power when it is in the single digits is an altogether different scenario. Our house has baseboard electric heat that had to work in some rooms not heated by the woodstove. In conclusion, and as a follow up,after five years it did exactly what is what purchased for.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A portable beast When I decided to purchase my generator, I spoke with a fellow instructor at the JATC. The company he works for is an authorized dealer of Generac and he understood my needs, as my home doesn't have natural gas nor a large propane tank. This generator is basically a whole house generator on wheels but uses gasoline. Assembly was rather easy with basic tools but a friend to help is recommended due to the weight of the unit. Speaking of weight, maneuvering is easy with the large pneumatic tires. Once the fuel system was primed it fires up a moment after the start toggle is pressed. The fuel tank is large, most small cars don't even hold 16 gallons, buy several 5 gallon cans as they are easier to lift/transport. As a licensed electrician I did the install myself and chose not to install a transfer switch but used a main breaker lock-out on my panel. As it sits the generator is not AUTO transfer switch ready but any good electrician could void your warranty and make it work...lol. For being all electric I have a light load of only 44A max per leg and the GP17500E doesn't even bat an eye. Summary.....have basic tools and a friend to help. Higher an electrician to install the proper legal hook-up means. Buy several gas can and rotate the fuel often. Very satisfied with everything.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from RS8000E NOT SUITABLE FOR MODERN HOME ELECTRONICS Nowhere does Generac make it clear the RS8000E has a Total Harmonic Distortion (THD) rating greater than 3-5% and technically not suitable/safe for modern Home Electronics such as LED TVs, smart phone/computer charging or typically HVAC systems with electronic control boards. If you need an 8000W Generac portable generator for home backup FOR JUST A LITTLE MORE buy the Generac XT8000EFI or XT8500EFI instead which have “TruePower” technology for a THD rating <5%, which is safer for modern home electronics. I would not have purchased the RS8000E if Generac had clearly stated in the specs or on the box that is not ideal or truly safe for modern home electronics. Ask Generac for the THD rating of the RS8000E and all they can say is the THD is >5%, and confirm it’s not recommended for modern home electronics. It surprising, somewhat comical/sad, and inaccurate that on Generac’s own website if for portable generators you filter for “home backup” + “5,000-9,999 watts”, the results DO NOT include the XT8000EFI or XT8500EFI with TruePower, but rather the results list GP & RS series generators that DO NOT have “TruePower” and are not technically safe for modern home electronics. This is very confusing. Generac to update their filters and be more forthright with THD ratings and electronics safety/compatibility for their non-inverter based portable generators.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great generator but battery is junk I recently purchased a condense 8000 E generator with cord because I needed a little more power. I own a 5500 generac generator and have had not one issue . I notified Generac that the battery I received with the 8000 E would not hold a charge and that sense purchasing it had to charge it every time I started it so had to pull start it. They informed me that from where I live , I had to take the generator to a repair facility approximately 80 miles from where Iive so they could check the battery , to tell me it is bad. I feel it's totally ridiculous to drag a 200 +lb generator approximately 80 miles, ONE WAY, to tell me it wont hold a charge! Took it to a local battery dealer to check it and they said it was at zero, Well do tell!!. That's the ONLY COMPLAINT I HAVE WITH THIS UNIT, Generac customer service, rate 2 maybe 3!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from It does what it's supposed to After 35 years at the same address and typically dealing with 1 or 2 mostly short outages per year, we experienced an 8 hour outage and a 5 hour outage within 2 months. My wife said we need a generator! We looked at whole house backup but that seemed like overkill and very expensive. After lots of online research we settled on a Generac in the 6500-8000 watt range. Because we have a well, we needed 230v output. The price difference between 6500 and 8000 was so small, we opted for the GP8000e. The installer put a lockout on our electrical panel so we can switch between generator power or electric service but the generator cannot backfeed the incoming electric. Yesterday we experienced a 5 hour outage. After 30 minutes, I rolled the generator out of the garage and onto my patio. It fired up with electric start even though I had not charged the battery since the initial startup 4 months ago. I hooked up the 30amp cable to the receptacle on the house, switched the lockout on the service entrance to generator power and we had power. In addition to the well pump, furnace fan, and fridge, we ran the microwave, an electric cooktop (not at the same time), and all the lights we wanted. My only complaint, though not unexpected, was the volume. It is loud! My phone sound meter app registered 90db at about 10' away. It was about 8' from our family room and even with the windows closed, it was too loud to watch TV comfortably so we retreated to the basement. It's also quite heavy but I had no real trouble wheeling it around the house from the garage to the patio. Overall, I'm very pleased with it and my wife was happy that we had water and a cold refrigerator during our 5 hour outage.
