Unreliable Generator
Owned it 2 years. Refused to start on one of regular start up dates. Took to small engine repair. He got it started after changing spark plugs. Got it home and battery was dead. Refuses to start. Can't count on it when we have a power outage. Waste of money. Now having to look at getting a Honda.

It’s a great generator,
I read some of the reviews, I disagree with what they say about the generic generator. If you’re reading the manual, every three months, you’re supposed to run the trickle charger for X amount of hours. My battery is 2 years old no problems. It starts every time not sure why they put a pull cord on it.

Avoid at all costs!!!
I picked up one of these turds directly from Generac. They were refurbished units.. Well, I should have known better. I have owned a 7500 Watt Carbureted unit for a decade, never an issue starting it. Thats not the case with the EFI model.. Generac has a huge startabilty issue with these. Forget EVER getting it to start when its colder than 30 degrees. Total waste of money, they also ship with a battery too small for even a warm day to start. I regret this purchase more than you can imagine. Wasted almost $1,000 on a Generator that wont start when you need it most!! Shame on Generac for shipping out refurbished garbage. I will never purchase another Generac product. An oh yea, this has been looked at by a service center, they couldn't figure this thing out. SAVE YOUR MONEY and buy another brand. I will tell everyone how trash this EFI model really is. Nothing like buying a generator for emergencies and being stranded. in 10 degrees.. How sad Generac, shame on you.

Unreliable, dies in the rain, poor support.
Received brand new just a few days ago, ahead of a big storm. It ran for five minutes and then died as soon as it got a little wet. Tried restarting, but it shuts down immediately every time. Throwing fault P1600, which nobody knows what it means. Generac L2 support is largely unhelpful and can only advise me to disconnect the battery (which did not fix anything). Let it dry out for an hour and it ran for another five minutes before dying. None of the local service centers have the time or experience to work on an EFI generator and will not service it. In New England, a failed generator can be life threatening. This will be my last Generac. Not reliable at all.

Nice Generator
This is a great generator as long as you keep the battery fully charged.
1. Keep the generator battery charged. It will not pull start with a dead battery. Use the battery charged that comes with the generator.
2. If you can't keep the generator on the charger install a battery disconnect between the battery cable and the battery. My battery would drain when sitting for 2 weeks or more. The switch solves the problem.

xt8500 efi is a very nice generator for the price
I'm a controls engineer who was very fussy about what kind of power that is going to my house. i know what kind of damage could happen if you get power spikes, power surge and transient voltage. all kind of the same thing. when testing what kind of power that came off of it seemed great. 60hz and 240volt RMS. I had zero problem with it. i do charge the battery every 90 days give or take. my only complaint that i have with it is i wanted a spine on oil filter. Generac said it had one, it's a fine screen not quit what i wanted. but it was already delivered so i keep it. One thing i would get for your house with any generator is a whole house surge protector.

Great generator if it will start!
Bought this generator for power outages due to frequent storms. Started perfect when I purchased it and loved the ease of electric start. Problem-you cannot leave it more than a few days or it won’t start. It has 8 hours on it and will not start unless you jump it. Not what I was expecting for the cost! My old Honda lasted nearly 28 years without any issues until the gas tank rusted out. This is the reason why I purchased the Generac. Very disappointed for the reason that I am usually alone and the help of someone else is not always available.
