Connecticut Energy Storage Solutions Program with Generac PWRcell

Earn Up to $10,800 by Enrolling*

When you purchase a Generac PWRcell, you may be able to enroll in the Connecticut Energy Storage Solutions program. This program, where available, allows your utility to utilize your PWRcell to reduce grid strain. In exchange for your participation, the Connecticut Green Bank will provide upfront incentives of up to $10,800 to install a new Generac PWRcell. In addition, after the installation of your PWRcell, your utility will pay you up to $1,620 per year. The actual amount you get paid by your utility is based on how much your battery contributes during high demand days.

Connecticut Energy Storage Solutions Incentive Breakdown

Incentive Rate   Estimated Incentive Amount for 18 kWh PWRcell
Upfront Incentive for New PWRcell Installation

$250/kWh for Standard Customers

$400/kWh for Underserved Customers

$600/kWh for Low-Income Customers
  $4,500-$10,800**
Annual Incentive for PWRcell   $225/kW-year     Up to $1,620***

*The actual amount of your incentive is determined by the Connecticut Green Bank based on your eligibility and the size of your PWRcell.

**Estimated upfront incentives are based on multiplying the incentive rate by the size of the battery. For example, the standard customer that installs a 18 kWh battery would multiply $250/kWh by 18 kWh to derive their upfront incentive of $4,500.

***This is not a guarantee of performance. The amount your battery contributes during high demand days can fluctuate based on your battery settings and how long the utility calls on your battery, among other factors. Your utility determines the amount of your incentive. The estimated incentive shown here is based on 80% of an 18 kWh battery participating every time the utility calls on the battery to reduce grid strain. The estimate assumes the utility always calls on the battery for two hours.

About the Connecticut Energy Storage Solutions Program

Connecticut Energy Storage Solutions is a program where utilities partner with participating homeowners to harness clean energy during times of peak energy use, to help alleviate stress on the power grid.

During the day, when the sun is shining, your PWRcell captures and stores energy from your solar panels. Then, during peak usage hours your utility may call on your battery to release its energy.

Key Program Details*

  • Your PWRcell will discharge 80% of its available energy every weekday in June, July, and August from 5 to 8 pm (only applicable for customers that receive the upfront incentive).

  • Your utility may also call on your PWRcell to discharge from 12 to 9 pm up to 65 times per year.

  • When your utility calls on your PWRcell to discharge energy, it will discharge for two to three hours at a time, no more than once per day.

How to Apply and Participate

To apply, email enroll@generacgs.com to express your interest. We will reply with a request for you to provide additional information and accept program terms and conditions.

Once you apply and your utility accepts you into the program, Generac will notify you that you have been accepted into the program. After this confirmation, you do not need to take any further action. Your PWRcell will automatically participate in this program. Frequently asked questions

To be eligible to participate, you must own your PWRcell and be a residential customer of Eversource (in Connecticut) or United Illuminating. The program terms include a full list of eligibility requirements.

To unenroll if you are an Eversource customer, email info@energyhub.com. To unenroll if you are a United Illuminating customer, email UI_ESS_support@uplight.com.

ou can set up your PWRcell 2 to reserve energy for a grid outage by changing the Backup Reserve Capacity setting in your Generac app. If you have a PWRcell 1, you will be changing the Minimum Reserve Capacity setting. When the utility calls on your PWRcell to help the power grid as part of your participation in Connecticut Energy Storage Solutions, your PWRcell will not discharge below this setting. In addition, the utilities and the program administrator will make reasonable efforts to avoid calling on your PWRcell if large scale storms are forecasted.

For customers that received an upfront incentive as part of the program, you agreed to set your Backup Reserve Capacity or Minimum Reserve Capacity setting to 20% to allow your PWRcell to support the grid. If you set your PWRcell above this level in June, July, or August, you may be subject to the Connecticut Green Bank requesting you pay back a pro-rated portion of the upfront incentive you received.

Within PWRview you can set how much energy you want to reserve for backup power. As you lower this slider, there will be more energy provided to the power grid when the utility calls on your PWRcell to contribute. The most common setting utilized by customers and installers is 20%. However, if you are less concerned about maintaining energy in your battery to provide backup power, you can lower this to zero for PWRcell 2 and five percent for PWRcell 1 to maximize the incentive you earn in Connecticut Energy Storage Solutions.
