PWRcell 2 FAQ 

PWRcell 2 is a battery storage system that harnesses power from the sun or the electric grid to help you reduce energy costs, minimize your reliance on the electric grid, and be prepared for unexpected power outages. Every PWRcell 2 system consists of one Generac Smart Disconnect Switch (SDS), one inverter, one battery cabinet, at least three lithium-ion battery modules, and an ecobee Smart Thermostat Enhanced. 

PWRcell 2 stores energy from either solar panels or the grid in lithium-ion battery modules. The inverter converts the stored energy from direct current (DC) energy into alternating current (AC) energy which can be used to power your home during peak demand times or utility power outages. 

Generac does not manufacture or distribute solar panels, but our storage solutions are compatible with most panels. Authorized Generac installers can help you select and purchase the right panels for your home, and install the entire system.

How long your battery lasts depends on several factors including how large (kWh) your battery is, how much power your home uses over a certain time, and how much power (kW) your inverter is rated to push through to your house at a given time.

Battery storage system sizing is a critical part of your consultation, so make sure to discuss desired usage plans with your local authorized Generac installer.

PWRcell 2 offers you the ability to offset your usage of the electric grid. During peak demand times, when utility prices are at their highest, the stored energy can be deployed to power your home, helping you minimize usage of the highest cost energy from the grid. 

During a utility power outage, PWRcell 2 provides energy resiliency, by giving you backup power that can be recharged from the sun when the grid goes down. Your system can use stored battery energy to keep your home loads running, and to allow your solar panels to continue to produce power and/or charge your batteries during the day. 

Generac is proud to offer one of the largest energy storage capacities in a single cabinet when compared to competitive products on the market today. One battery cabinet, consisting of six battery modules, offers 18 kWh of energy storage capacity.

Each home has unique energy needs. Generac PWRcell 2 offers a modular design for easy customization that meets most customers’ electricity needs. Given the number of configurations available, we recommend that you work with an authorized Generac installer to determine the right size for your home.

Yes! PWRcell 2 has a modular design that allows you to add capacity as your needs change. You can store 9 to 18 kWh in a single cabinet.  

Because of the modular design and lightweight components, Generac PWRcell 2 is systems are easy to install. Your local authorized Generac installer will be able to give you an accurate estimate for your unique solution, as time varies due to installer schedules, municipal code requirements and other factors. 

The battery is often installed in locations such as the garage, a utility room, or even outdoors. Your local, authorized Generac installer will discuss the best available mounting options for your home and system.

The PWRcell 2 Inverter, Battery Cabinet and Smart Disconnect Switch (SDS) include a 10-year warranty that covers the cost of parts, labor, and limited travel time for all qualified warranty claims within the warranty period. The included ecobee Smart Thermostat Enhanced includes a standard 3-year limited warranty, with an available 5-year warranty for professionally installed devices. 

Basic maintenance includes cleaning the cabinet exterior with a soft cloth, ensuring the areas near the intake or exhaust vents are free from debris that could obstruct airflow, and removing and cleaning the air filter as needed. Additional service, as required, may be performed by an independent authorized service dealer.

Yes. PWRcell 2 is equipped with Smart Grid Ready technology, which means you may be eligible to take part in a local Virtual Power Plant (VPP) program that might exist in your area, and earn rewards. These programs help maintain grid stability and increase your energy independence. Check with your local dealer for eligibility.
