Situation
Hosting.com is a secure, compliant-managed cloud hosting company that is consistently recognized within the industry for its ability to support business-critical applications. The company owns and operates six strategically located data centers under an ITIL-based control environment validated for compliance. The company’s headquarters — and one of the key data centers — located in Denver, CO, required a diesel-powered backup power solution that could meet its anticipated 3 MW needs.

Challenges
Due to limited space availability at the facility, a rooftop installation was required. Fuel supply was a concern, as the tanks for the diesel gensets had to meet strict weight restrictions to support such an installation. And while the company expected rapid growth, initially only 2 MW of power was needed. Hosting.com required a flexible solution that would allow them to add units as their power requirements grew.

Solution
Rocky Mountain Power Generation, a Generac Industrial Distributor located in Denver, worked with Hosting.com to recommend the innovative Gemini® power system. The first and only compact paralleled solution to house two 500 kW generators within a single enclosure, the Gemini system provides 1000 kW of power in a footprint that is 20% smaller and much lighter weight than a single large gen-set. Another key benefit the system’s inherent redundancy: one of units can be taken out of service for maintenance or repair while the other unit remains available to cover critical loads should an outage occur.
Initially, two 1000 kW Generac Gemini generators were installed on the roof. The third Gemini unit was added to the scalable application in 2015 as the predicted power demands grew.

To meet the weight requirements, the first two units use small 330 gal. sub-base fuel tanks that act as day tanks. They are being supplied from a much larger ground-level main fuel storage tank. The third Gemini unit as well as a projected fourth unit will share the fuel from the first two modules.

Up to seven Gemini units can be paralleled for a total output of 7 MW per bus, and these systems are fully compliant with NEC 700 and NFPA 110.
